Call to Artists 2023
Arts Are Elementary is pleased to announce our 2023 Call to Artists requesting proposals for professional artist residencies for Brunswick's public elementary schools during the 2023-2024 academic year.
The Call lists each grade, subject matter, media, timeframe, and stipend.
Submissions are due by April 11, 2023, 11:59 pm and should be emailed to Jenn Burns Gray, Executive Director at aaedirector@gmail.com.
Questions may be directed to Jenn at that same email or 207-798-2900.
Submissions should include the teaching artist’s resume, the proposed program, and cost. Additional images may be supplied. See the district curriculum links embedded for more information.
Note: Several of our grades have requested that this year’s artist return so we have removed those grades from this year’s Call.
Background & Notes
Teaching artists with classroom behavior management skills are particularly successful.
We often have difficulty managing student absences. Planning ahead on how to help absent students catch up is helpful.
Scheduling the residencies is a collaborative effort between the teachers and the artist. Most of the residencies occur in the late winter and spring.
There are 2 elementary schools in Brunswick:
-
Kate Furbish Elementary School
-
6 classes of pre-kindergarten - approx. 16 children in each class (2 classes are located at off site locations)
-
7 classes of 1st grade - approx. 20 children in each class
-
7 classes of 2nd grade - approx. 17 children in each class
-
4 classes of mixed 1st and 2nd (multi-age) grade - approx. 20 children in each class
-
Note: The multi age classes alternate using a 1st grade or a 2nd grade curriculum. The 2023-2024 school year will be a 1st grade curriculum year for them and will join the 1st grade classes for their residency. There will be a total of 11 classes (7 1st grade and 4 multi-age)
-
The residencies must occur in the classrooms as there is no additional space in the building.
-
Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School
-
8 classes of 4th grade - approx. 22 children in each class
General residencies information
-
The residencies are usually 2-4 sessions for each class, with each session being 30 minutes - 1 hour long. The older the students, the longer the sessions can run.
-
Note regarding pre-k: We are looking for one session for each class, each being 30 minutes long, to occur in the spring.
-
An artist is often able to fit 3 or less often, 4 sessions into a day with a short break in between each session.
-
The classroom teacher will be present for all the sessions. Classroom volunteers are available upon request.
-
Residencies will not start before 9 am and the last one will finish by 3 pm at the latest.
-
There will be a break in the middle of the day when the children are at lunch and recess, so often there will be 2 sessions in the morning, followed by a break of an hour or more and then one or possibly 2 sessions in the afternoon.
-
Materials should be provided by the artist and included in the stipend.
